Kevlar, Aramid, Diolen etc.

Aramid fibres are a special group of synthetic fibres which, owing to their chemical properties, are particularly strong and heat resistant. Kevlar, a trademark of DuPont, is probably the best known aramid fibre.

Aramid fibres, including Kevlar, are widely used in advanced composites either on their own or in conjunction with other high performance reinforcements such as carbon fibre. Kevlar (and similar fabrics) can provide heat/flame resistance, impact destruction resistance (inclusion of Kevlar in motorsports composites is a regulatory requirement in many motorsports) and are also used in body armour and bullet-proofing to name but a few applications.

Aramid Flat Braid

Aramids (such as Kevlar® and Twaron®) are very high tenacity man-made fibres with excellent mechanical properties in tensile strength and especially in elongation-to-break.

Aramid Flat Braid is a braid made from high tenacity yellow aramid fibre woven in such a way that the braid is 'flat', i.e. it is not a tube/sleeve but instead resembles a densely woven tape.

Diolen Woven Cloth

Diolen cloth is a high tenacity manmade yarn with characteristics similar to aramid fibres. Diolen reinforcement offers excellent elongation-to-break properties at a low cost. Innegra is a polypropylene fibre that can be used independently to provide weight reduction, levels of impact resistance and damage tolerance.

Aramid Flat Braid is a braid made from high tenacity yellow aramid fibre woven in such a way that the braid is 'flat', i.e. it is not a tube/sleeve but instead resembles a densely woven tape.

The fibre orientation of the tape is /- 45 degrees which means that the braid is ideally suited to handling torsional loads, affords excellent conformity (drape) without buckling the fibres and resists crack propagation.

Unlike woven Kevlar fabric that must be used in conjunction with a resin matrix (such as epoxy resin) to make a rigid Kevlar composite, knitted Kevlar textile can be used on its own as a flexible textile fabric to add its excellent performance in heat, abrasion and slash protection to a range of applications.

Knitted Kevlar® is soft and flexible and, with the exception of the Kevlar felt, has a good level of stretch too making it perfect as a kevlar lining material garments such as T-shirts, jeans, trousers, gloves and underwear. Adding a liner of Kevlar to any of these garments will significantly improve the protection they offer against slashes from knives, ripping (such as high speed contact with the road surface) and burns.

Knitted Kevlar® material is also often used in fire toys where it is wound around juggling batons and similar before being soaked in flammable liquid and ignited. Because of Kevlar's very high combustion temperature it will act as a wick for the flammable liquid without burning itself.

Easy Composites stock a range of kevlar material for sale including knitted Kevlar® and Kevlar® reinforced textiles in different weights, weaves and finishes. Take a look at the properties and recommended uses for the different materials to establish which will be the most suitable for your requirements.

All our Kevlar Protective Textiles use genuine Dupont® Kevlar® fibre. They are woven in the UK by the country's leading manufacturer of technical fabrics and supplied to the police, fire and emergency services and protective clothing manufacturers around the world.

Diolen cloth is a high tenacity manmade yarn with characteristics similar to aramid fibres. Although not as high performance as aramids (like Kevlar) diolen reinforcement does offer excellent elongation-to-break properties at a low cost and so is a popular choice for products which need to be impact resistant such as canoes, kayaks, life rafts etc. Innegra is a high modulus polypropylene fibre that can be used independently or in conjunction with other fibres to provide weight reduction, excellent levels of impact resistance and damage tolerance. Innegra also has a very low density and is hydrophobic meaning it is an excellent choice for the leisure market.
