RESIN, GEL, SILICONE, ADHESIVES

An essential part of any composite material, epoxy resin forms the matrix that bonds the fibres of reinforcement together. Epoxy gelcoat is a type of resin that can be used to create a surface layer free from reinforcement, improving the surface finish or UV stability of a laminate.

RTV silicone rubber can be used to make flexible rubber parts or create accurate and detailed flexible moulds which can then be filled with a range of casting resins to make sculptures, plastic parts or rapid prototypes.

Our range of Structural Adhesives are suitable for a range of high performance structural and engineering bonding applications.

  • Epoxy Resin Supplier

    media.nl?id=6749&c=3937524&h=c974043fdb7

CarbonMakers Composites is a leading supplier of specialist epoxy resins for advanced composites.

Epoxy resins are very low odour (compared to polyester and vinylester) and generally involve mixing resin with hardener and relatively equal proportions (such as 1-1, 2-1 or 5-1) compared to polyester resin which is reacted by catalyst at ratios more like 100-1.

All CarbonMakers Composites epoxy systems have been specially chosen for particular properties which are clearly explained on the product pages. They are all very high performance resins suitable for use with glass fibre, carbon fibre and aramid (such as Kevlar) fibre reinforcement.

    Epoxy mould making

A general rule of composites mould making and laminating is that moulds made used polyester resin should not be used to make parts using epoxy resin. In simplistic terms, the reason for this is that a combination of epoxy resin on one side and polyester resin on the other side of a release agent (such as PVA or wax) tends to disturb the release agent and will result in parts that stick to the mould. Instead, if you intend to make epoxy based parts then you should make your moulds out of epoxy resin and epoxy gelcoat too.

CarbonMakers Composites stock a wide range of Epoxy Resin products including the GlassCast® range and ArtResin® for craft and artistic applications alongside high performance epoxies for laminating, coating, high temperature, skinning and even a bio resin option. • Epoxy Gelcoat

    media.nl?id=6751&c=3937524&h=10a7ea5daa4

Gelcoats are special resins that are designed to form the first surface of a composite mould or part. Gelcoats are generally applied as a thickness of 0.3-0.7mm and are specially formulated to provide the part or mould surface with properties such as resistance to UV (ultraviolet) degradation, hydrolysis or osmosis (where water is absorbed into a composite over considerable time). Gelcoats also include thixotropic additives to make them thicker and more able to stick to inclined surfaces of moulds.

Epoxy gelcoats are based on epoxide resin and polyamine hardener (just like epoxy resin) and should be used when making parts using epoxy resin, if a gelcoat surface is required.

Gelcoats are applied to a mould surface and allowed to cure to a certain point before the first layer of laminate is applied. Unlike polyester gelcoats, if an epoxy gelcoat is allowed to fully cure before the laminate is applied the quality of the bond between the rest of the laminate and the gelcoat is considerably reduced.

    Tooling Gelcoats

Tooling gelcoats are specially designed to provide a highly polish-able and durable surface to epoxy based moulds. They are formulated to create a surface capable of yielding hundreds of releases, resist surface damage and work well with a wide range of release agents.

Uni-Mould is a special universal moulding system developed to simplify and reduce the cost of producing high quality composites moulds, particularly for larger parts.

The Uni-Mould system is made up of 3 specially formulated resins, all capable of high operating temperatures and filled for zero shrinkage:

    • Uni-Mould Tooling Gelcoat (single or double application to 0.8mm)
    • Uni-Mould Coupling Coat (used with 2 layer of 100g CSM)
    • Uni-Mould Tooling Resin (used with 4 layers of 450g CSM)

Moulds made using the Uni-Mould system are suitable for use making parts using epoxy, polyester, vinylester and even pre-preg resin systems. Moulds can be used for wet-lay, vacuum bagging, resin infusion and rapid tooling systems.

For further information see our Uni-Mould Advantages and Laminating Guide.
